Trigger orders and time-in-force settings explained for Ghanaian traders

Beyond buy and sell buttons, exchanges offer trigger orders and time-in-force options that control when and how long an order acts. Learn what they do on Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget.

Once you are comfortable with limit and market orders, the next layer of the order form starts to matter. Trigger orders wait for the market to reach a level before acting, which lets you plan entries and exits without watching the screen. Time-in-force settings decide how long an order stays alive and whether it may fill partially. These options exist in some form on Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget, though names and menus differ slightly. Misunderstanding them leads to orders that never fill, fill only partly or fire at a moment you did not expect. This guide explains the concepts in plain terms so you can match them to the labels in your own app and use them deliberately rather than by accident.

How a trigger price works

A trigger order has two parts: the condition and the action. The condition is a trigger price; when the market reaches it, the action is carried out, usually by placing a market or limit order. Before saving, check which price the trigger follows. On some platforms you can choose between the last traded price and a mark or index price, and the difference matters during sharp moves. Also confirm whether the order is meant to buy or sell once triggered, since a reversed side is an easy mistake.

Market versus limit after the trigger

When the trigger is hit, a market action is very likely to fill but may execute well away from the trigger in a fast move or a thin market. A limit action protects the price but might not fill at all if the market jumps past your limit. Many traders set the limit slightly beyond the trigger to leave a small buffer. There is no universal answer; the right choice depends on whether being out of the position or getting a specific price matters more in that situation.

Good till cancelled, IOC and FOK

Good till cancelled keeps an order in the book until it fills or you cancel it, which suits patient limit orders. Immediate or cancel fills whatever it can at once and cancels the rest, useful when you want no resting order left behind. Fill or kill executes the entire quantity immediately or cancels completely, avoiding partial fills. Some exchanges also offer post-only as a separate setting. Check the help centre of each platform to see which options appear for spot and derivatives, as availability can differ by product.

Review open and triggered orders regularly

Conditional orders are easy to forget once placed. Check the open orders and conditional orders tabs at least weekly, and cancel anything that no longer fits your plan. A stop you placed weeks ago may now sit at a meaningless level. After any trigger fires, look at the order history to see the actual fill price and compare it with the trigger. Recording these results in a short note builds an understanding of how your chosen settings behave in real markets.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Check whether each trigger follows the last traded price or the mark price before saving the order.
  • Decide in advance whether a triggered order should execute as a market or a limit order.
  • Choose good till cancelled, immediate or cancel, or fill or kill deliberately rather than leaving the default.
  • Review open and conditional orders weekly and cancel any that no longer match your current plan.
