Checking spread and slippage on small orders before trading from Ghana
The visible fee is only part of what a trade costs. How users in Ghana can see the spread and slippage on Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget before placing an order, especially on smaller coins.
Multiple exchanges | Ghana | GHS | fees, access and account safety
When people in Ghana compare platforms, they usually look at the trading fee page and stop there. The price you actually get also depends on the spread, which is the gap between the best buy and sell prices, and on slippage, which is the difference between the price you expected and the price your order filled at. On busy pairs these costs can be small, but on thinly traded coins or during sudden moves they can be much larger than the fee itself. This guide explains how to check both on Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget before you trade, using only the order book and the official fee pages.
Look at the order book first
Before placing an order, open the order book for the pair and compare the best bid and best ask. A narrow gap means the market is active; a wide gap means you lose more the moment you buy or sell. Then look at how much volume sits at each price level. If your order is larger than what is available near the top, part of it will fill at worse prices.
Understand market versus limit
A market order fills immediately at whatever prices are available, which is where slippage appears. A limit order lets you set the worst price you accept, at the cost of possibly not filling. On thin pairs, a limit order near the current price is often a better habit. Check the official help pages for how each order type works and how maker and taker fees apply.
Watch quick-buy screens
Simple buy and convert screens are convenient but may include a spread in the quoted price rather than showing it as a separate fee. Before confirming, compare the quoted price with the current order book price for the same pair. If the difference looks large, consider using the regular trading screen instead, and record the comparison so you learn which route suits you.
Keep a small cost log
For your next few trades, write down the price you expected, the price you received, the fee charged and the time of day. After a handful of entries you will see which pairs and times give you the most slippage. This simple log is more useful than any general advice, because it reflects the coins and order sizes you actually use.
