Lost the SIM your exchange login depends on? A recovery plan for users in Ghana

A stolen phone or a SIM swap can lock you out of your exchange and expose it at the same time. What to do in the first hour, how to reclaim the number and how to reset security on the exchange.

In Ghana a phone number does a lot of work: mobile money, bank alerts, WhatsApp and, for many traders, the SMS codes that protect an exchange account. When that SIM disappears, through theft or a fraudulent SIM swap, two problems arrive together. You cannot receive your own codes, and someone else might. The steps below are ordered by urgency, starting with stopping damage and ending with a setup that will not depend on a single SIM again.

First hour: block the number and freeze what you can

Call your network operator from another phone and ask them to block the SIM. If your service suddenly showed no signal without explanation, mention that you suspect a SIM swap. Then sign in to your exchange on a device that is still logged in, if you have one, and use the option to disable or freeze the account found in the security settings. Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget all offer a way to lock the account quickly, and their help centers describe it. Do the same for mobile money and banking.

Get the number back before you reset the exchange

Visit an operator service centre with your Ghana Card to have the SIM replaced on the same number. Most exchange recovery flows still send a code to the old number or email, so having the line back makes the next step much easier. While you wait, check your email inbox for messages about new logins, password changes or withdrawal requests, and do not delete them. They are evidence for the support team if something was taken.

Run the exchange's security reset

On the login page choose the option for being unable to receive verification codes, or find the reset security item in the help center. You will be asked to confirm your identity, often with a selfie and the ID you used during verification, and there may be a waiting period during which withdrawals are blocked. That delay is a protection, not a fault. If you see transactions you did not make, open a support chat from the logged-in account and attach the timeline and screenshots.

Rebuild security so one SIM cannot sink you again

Once you are back in, add an authenticator app or a passkey and remove SMS as the main second factor where the exchange allows it. Save the authenticator's backup or recovery codes on paper in a safe place, set an anti-phishing code for emails and turn on a withdrawal whitelist. Ask your operator whether you can set a PIN for SIM replacement requests. Review the account's device list and sign out of anything you do not recognise.

  • Ask your network operator to block the SIM immediately and mention a suspected SIM swap.
  • Freeze the exchange account from a logged-in device or via the help center's lock option.
  • Replace the SIM on the same number with your Ghana Card before starting the exchange reset.
  • Switch to an authenticator or passkey, store backup codes on paper and enable a withdrawal whitelist.
