What a cedi-to-USDT purchase really costs: building your own baseline before you trade

The visible trading fee is only one part of turning cedis into USDT. Add the mobile money charge, the P2P price gap and any withdrawal fee to see the true cost, and compare it the same way each time.

Ask a group of Ghanaian traders what it costs to buy USDT and you will hear very different answers, often quoting only the exchange's trading fee. In practice the cost is spread across several steps: the mobile money transfer to the seller, the gap between the P2P price and the market price, the exchange fee if you trade further, and the network fee if you move the coins out. Writing these down once gives you a baseline, and repeating the same calculation tells you whether a route or a seller is getting better or worse.

Start from the cedi amount that left your phone

Take the total that mobile money actually deducted from your wallet, including the transfer charge shown on the confirmation message, not the amount you typed in. That is your true starting figure. If you paid by card instead, look at the bank statement once the payment settles, because currency conversion or card fees may only appear there. Every later step is compared against this number.

Measure the P2P price gap

In the P2P order details, note the price per USDT you agreed with the seller. At the same moment, open the spot market of the same exchange and note the last USDT price in a reference currency the exchange shows, or compare with the price offered by several other sellers for the same payment method. The difference between your price and the typical price is part of what you paid, even though no fee label appears next to it. Sellers with very attractive prices sometimes have strict conditions or low completion rates, so read their profile too.

Add exchange and network charges from the official pages

If you convert the USDT into another coin, check the trade confirmation for the fee charged; the live maker and taker rates for your account level are listed on each exchange's fee schedule page. If you withdraw, the withdrawal screen shows the network fee and minimum for the network you pick, and these change over time, so read them at the moment you send. Do not rely on numbers posted in chat groups, which are often out of date.

Keep a simple sheet and repeat it

In a notebook or spreadsheet, keep a row per purchase with the date, cedis deducted, USDT received, the P2P price, the market reference price and any fees from the confirmations. Divide cedis spent by USDT received to get your effective price. After several purchases you will see which payment method, seller or time of day gives you a better result, and you will notice quickly if something changes.
