Before you tap Update on an exchange app in Ghana: checking the developer name, permissions and release notes

App updates are routine, but they are also when fake versions and risky permission requests slip in. A short routine for Android and iPhone users in Ghana before installing an exchange app update.

Multiple exchanges | Ghana | GHS | fees, access and account safety

Most people in Ghana trade crypto on a phone, and exchange apps release updates often. Usually that is good news, because updates fix security problems. The risk comes from the edges: a message on WhatsApp saying your app is outdated and offering a file to download, an update that suddenly asks for access to your contacts, or a phone low on storage that leaves the old version half-installed. A two-minute check before each update keeps you on the genuine app and avoids surprises at login.

Update only from the store listing you installed from

Open Google Play or the App Store and go to your installed apps, then find the exchange app there rather than searching for it again. Check that the developer name on the listing matches the one shown on the exchange's own help center. Ignore links sent in chats, text messages or social media posts telling you to update, even if they show the exchange logo. A genuine update reaches you through the store, and the exchange will not ask you to install a file from a link.

Read what changed and what the app now asks for

The listing shows release notes and, on Android, a summary of permissions. An exchange app needs the camera for identity checks and QR codes, notifications for alerts and perhaps biometrics for login. If an update starts requesting access to SMS, contacts, call logs or accessibility services without a clear reason in the notes, pause and check the exchange's announcements first. On Android you can later review permissions under Settings, Apps, then the exchange app.

Prepare the phone before a large update

Make sure you have enough free storage and a stable connection, because a failed update can leave the app unusable until it is reinstalled. Confirm that your authenticator app or passkey is working and that you know your account password, in case the update logs you out. On a phone shared with family members, check that the app lock or biometric login is still switched on after updating, since some updates reset these preferences.

Check the account after the first login

Once updated, open the app and look at the security section: recent login activity, devices and your anti-phishing code if you set one. Everything should look as it did before. If the app shows unfamiliar prompts, such as asking you to re-enter your seed phrase or move funds to verify your account, stop. Exchanges do not ask for that, and the app you are using may not be the real one.

Risk boundary: Ghana Crypto Guide

Digital assets are volatile and derivatives can amplify losses. This website has no login, wallet connection, deposit form or customer-support chat. A referral link only records attribution; it does not guarantee access, pricing, rewards, approval or investment results. Availability can differ by residence, legal entity and product, so no regional access is assumed from language or branding alone.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Update the exchange app from your installed apps list in Google Play or the App Store, not from a chat link.
  • Compare the developer name on the listing with the one in the exchange's help center.
  • Read the release notes and question new permissions such as SMS, contacts or accessibility.
  • After updating, confirm app lock, login activity and the anti-phishing code look as before.
